Jane is stuck in the loop of a romcom. It’s the sort of romcom that lulls you into a false sense of security. Fall in love! He breaks your heart. Be nothing without him! Make yourself more desirable! Sort yourself out! He’s back declaring his love. Take him back! Start all over again! And again...
But what if Jane doesn't want to play the game? What happens when we start to deconstruct those parameters? Fem Club uses puppetry, comedy, lipsync, narration and a banging pop soundtrack to make an explosion of bisexual feminist rebellion. It’s a tearing up of the rom com rule book, and it’s an offer of joyful communion. But it’s not going to be easy - Jane’s going to have to break a sweat, and there may be some casualties.
In breaking free of the never-ending cycle of events, Jane enlists the audience in helping forge a queer utopia and find her place in the narrative as a bisexual woman.
Fem Club was initially created by Allison Birt as part of her dissertation piece at Rose Bruford College and was then commissioned by Curious Arts in October 2023 where Ella McKeown joined as director and co-writer. It has since been in development with support from Greenwich Theatre, Unicorn Theatre and Ricochet Theatre and was shortlisted for the 2025 Pleasance Theatre Charlie Hartill Award.
